The project’s origin:

The Kunsthalle and the Municipal Archives of the City of Mulhouse welcomed Tanja Boukal for a research and creation project around the DMC archives.
For several months, Tanja Boukal was engaged in the documentary collection of DMC and the work of Thérèse de Dillmont (1846-1890), embroiderer, trained in needlework at the Vienna Embroidery Academy, author of the Encyclopedia of Needlework and designer for DMC.
Trained in embroidery in the 1990s at the same school as Dillmont, Tanja Boukal feels intellectually close to this great embroiderer and to all those who, like her, put their talent and passion for needlework at the display in order to teach their skills.

Now that contemporary industrialization has practically driven people out of their systems, Tanja Boukal proposes to formulate a new relationship between humans and machines and to regain a sense of control by doing something that machines cannot do - to embroider them.

Produced with the support of DMC SAS.
