For the work group Rewind comprising three series, Tanja Boukal visited Columbian drug baron Pablo Escobar’s Hacienda Nápoles, Adolf Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest in Obersalzberg in Bavaria, and Tahrir Square in Cairo. She compared what these places actually look like with the media images of events that occurred there. To what extent has history been inscribed in the buildings or grounds? How are these sites dealt with? Boukal traces these issues and similar ones using her own, present-day photographic documentation. In computer-generated collages, she then links these photos with older media images. Boukal selects various materials as picture carriers—enamel panels, slate slabs, and Plexiglass—that exhibit direct relationships to the historical context. She scratches at the surface—at times literally—to create a space-time continuum from fragments of the past and present.
