THE DIGNITY OF MAN …
… into your hands is given.
Keep and preserve it!
With you it sinks, with you it will arise.
(The Artists, Friedrich von Schiller)

In 2014 Europe commemorates a number of significant historical events: a century has passed since the outbreak of World War I; 100 years ago Europe mourned the death of Bertha von Suttner, the first woman ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize; World War II broke out 75 years ago, and 25 years ago the Berlin Wall finally fell. The generation of witnesses, victims and perpetrators is disappearing, and one day there will be no one left who can (or could) tell the story of the war years in Europe, when human dignity was closer to faltering than ever before. Today the idea of a war raging across Europe seems utterly unrealistic to most of the continent’s population.
But is it, in fact? What are the everyday signs indicating a loss of human dignity? Which strategies can we use to protect dignity, a central humanitarian principle, from being instrumentalised and commercialised?
A joint exhibition project by the cities of Vienna, Sarajevo and Brno tales an artistic approach to the undermining and dismantling of the very framework conditions considered indispensable for “dignity” in connection with human life forms.
